Piranesi – Le Vedute di Roma

The book includes full reproductions of all 135 etchings of Piranesi’s Le Vedute di Roma, plus the 2 etchings made by his son Francesco and the Pianta di Roma e del Campo Marzo. It is produced directly from a complete original Piranesi catalogue.

The book is produced in a large size (370 x 290 mm) in which all images are printed full page (350 mm wide). The 296 pages inside are printed in mono chrome and the artwork is reproduced with a stunning clarity and sharpness. Every page etching is 50-60% of the original size, allowing the reader to enjoy all the beautiful details of these graphic jewels.

The publication offers an informative guide to various matters concerning Piranesi and the city he depicted that can only enhance the reader’s enjoyment. It is aimed both at academic readers who want to have a deeper understanding of Piranesi and to readers who love his artwork and are interested to know more about it. Readers may follow the chronological order or leaf at leisure, thus creating their own Journey through the Eternal City.

The text is written by Dr. J.G. (Gijs) Wallis de Vries, architectural historian at the University of Eindhoven in The Netherlands. He obtained his PhD with a dissertation on Piranesi and the idea of the beautiful city in 1990, and has published a series of articles and papers on Piranesi.
